Drupal has passionate coders. We need more passionate users.

I just took 30+ minutes to watch Kathy Sierra speaking at a WordCamp SF event. It's worth listening to.

Hosted Solr site search for Drupal is on the way

Jay's picture

The search technology area is highly important to people with websites. As a result, I've spent serious time looking at it. Several things have come from this time spent:

  • The important thing: We'll soon be adding "hosted site search" capabilities to the Acquia Network for our subscribers. More about this below.

Typical day at Acquia

Lots of video conversations. Jay gets goofy occasionally. Jeff runs a timer to keep us (me) from going down too many rabbit holes. Dries wears headphones to keep from driving Karlijn nuts.

Making Drupal better - a daily task

Jay's picture

Of course I love Drupal. I wouldn't have worked with Dries to start the company if I didn't.

But there are clearly areas where there is still a ton of work to be done to give more leverage to both developers and end users. It's nice to know, though, that there's a world of people out there using their own labor to do the work.

A taste of competition

This isn't a high-falutin', high-thinking blog post. It's just about the kind of culture we have here.

As you may have seen, I like cycling. And many (most) of our code-names for projects are all cycling terms -- like Carbon for our distribution, or Spokes for our network services.

Assisting community growth

Both Dries and I have agreed on one key thing with each other since our first conversations about Acquia: 18 months after we start our business, we truly hope the community at large thinks Acquia has been a great thing for the Drupal project.

Modest pride

I don't want to sound too bombastic, or take more credit than is due. But I'm proud of what our team at Acquia did to help make Boston 2008 Drupalcon a fantastic event.

What are we building?

Jay's picture

Many people that we talk to are asking us about what we'll be building, and selling. Though we're fans of open source, and of working as openly as we can, we do have a few things that need to stay under wraps until they're fully baked. But since people keep asking, I want to offer some "spirit of what we're doing" as a temporary substitute.

Nice to meet you

Jay's picture

Most of you in the Drupal community don't know me much - if at all. I haven't been checking in Drupal code constantly, so I don't show up in CVS logs or in IRC. But I've been increasingly involved with Drupal behind the scenes. Since you don't know me, I'll spend a few moments of my first blog post here telling you about how I got here, and where I hope we're headed.
