Nice to meet you

Most of you in the Drupal community don't know me much - if at all. I haven't been checking in Drupal code constantly, so I don't show up in CVS logs or in IRC. But I've been increasingly involved with Drupal behind the scenes. Since you don't know me, I'll spend a few moments of my first blog post here telling you about how I got here, and where I hope we're headed.
I've spent the bulk of the last year focusing nearly entirely on Drupal - initially as a consultant using it to deliver websites for customers. Then I met Dries at Drupalcon in Sunnyvale in the spring of 2007. We felt an immediate friendship, and had similar opinions about the potential for Drupal - both its potential for use today to build great websites, as well as its potential to become a much more broadly-used platform.
Maybe just as importantly, we also agreed on what Drupal is missing - both from a technology as well as marketplace perspective - and what needs to be done to fill that gap. And, as that conversation continued, it was clear we wanted to work together to fix that problem.
The result is Acquia.
I'm both proud to be part of the Drupal community, and excited to be able to contribute the skills I have to make it better. I'm not a coder (anymore), but I do know business stuff, including how to raise capital and apply it for the benefit of all involved. I've built a commercial open source company once already, and am proud of our result. We did most things right, and even made a few mistakes - that I've hopefully learned from.
Dries and I intend that Acquia will follow the best practices of the best open source software companies, because they benefit both the community and the company. But the Drupal community and technology are unique. Accordingly, we're going to try some unique things in the way we run the company. We hope we can try them out with you - and that you'll tell us what you like, and what you don't like - without you throwing the baby (us) out with the bathwater (our experiments).
Dries and I share some key goals:
- First, to increase the number of people using Drupal by a factor of at least 10, if not more, in the next several years.
- Second, to invest focused attention on the software to make sure it fulfills its potential.
- Third, to build a company that respects the community, the Drupal way of doing things, and that (at the same time) can be a big commercial success.
- And finally, to build products and services that lots and lots of Drupal users will want - in order to build a successful company. We can only continue to do more and more for Drupal if we're making money. If we build stuff you want, we'll grow, which will help us invest more in Drupal. We hope it becomes a virtuous cycle.
We look forward to this ride together with you. We hope it's a fun, rockin', and exciting one.

This is a great introduction
This is a great introduction for the Drupal world at large who didn't get to meet you at either of the DrupalCons.
I think it would help to add user avatars on these posts?
Some online<->DrupalCon identity assistance for people who did go to the DrupalCons.
I think that this is the
I think that this is the next logical step in the lifecycle of the Drupal platform. As a user and implementer of many Drupal based sites I would like to see improvements in ease of deployment, possibly via a hosted Drupal offering.
This idea tracks along with what Matt Mullenweg and Automattic have done with WordPress. It appears to me that Wordpress.com has greatly expanded the visibility of and interest in WordPress in general.
Good luck. I look forward to seeing the positive benefits that Acquia brings to the Drupal community.
nice to meetcha to jay. this
nice to meetcha to jay. this is all very exciting! :)
great stuff
great stuff
Thanks for the introduction.
Thanks for the introduction. That has changed my initial view of "that businessman Dries is working with" to "that businessman that knows open source and Drupal Dries is working with".
Your first key goal - the tenfold increase of Drupal users - is an impressive one. But I think it's certainly doable. Drupal will see even more UI improvements in Drupal 7 that will push it beyond all competition, I think (and sincerely hope).
Nice meeting you, Jay :)
I think a tenfold increase
I think a tenfold increase in users is aiming low :P Increasing the market size by tenfold sounds better.
P.S. I know a certain anti-spam module that would be less painful than this captcha here....
I'm definitely with you
I'm definitely with you there, Boris :)
Thanks for the introduction,
Thanks for the introduction, Jay.

Nice intro. Things look increasingly better and better (and better :) ) Drupal's future is secured for many years to come and that's very good for me.

Thx, all, for comments.
Boris, the site we have is a bit of a hastily-assembled one. To be honest, we were planning on our unveiling more like "today" vs. two weeks ago. But Tony Byrne decided to tell the world about us before our planned date, and we couldn't convince him to wait a couple of weeks. So we had to scramble and get something up in a few hours. The module selection was not deeply considered. It was something like "Make sure we handle comment spam."
(By the way, Boris - hi!)
Hi Jay, Great to see you are
Hi Jay,
Great to see you are working with the Drupal folks! It was a pleasure working with you (in the old days) of Pingtel...I'm sure your involvement will do good things.
Dan
Thanks for the intro
Thanks for the intro Jay.
These constant communications are necessary in keeping the community tuned to what Acquia is doing, and establishing trust on an ongoing basis.
Of course, actions are what matters, and how they stick to the vision going forward. The community will keep an eye on these for sure.
Keep it up, and best wishes ...
P.S. I hate this captcha too. Use the better one ...
Thanks for the introduction,
Thanks for the introduction, Jay. I've been wanting to know a bit more about Dries new partner. I wish the both of you and your new company much success. It should be an exciting and interesting market in the next couple of years.
Thanks for the introduction
Thanks for the introduction Jay.
As Acquia navigates the waters of being commercial within an open source community, I'm glad to see your key goal of respecting that community.
I now work for a commercial firm that has that same type of relationship with a similarly large and distributed community. Even though maintaining that respect is a lot of work, the payoff is substantial. Keep Acquia's community relationship building on the front burner!
Glad to see this vision come
Glad to see this vision come out of the starting block! I'm definitely excited for the future of drupal based web services and tools.
Welcome aboard!
Hi Jay, Great post and

Was actually a big project
Was actually a big project like Acquia born in a couple of conversations a few months later? It is really amazing how great things grow up. Good luck!
