If two companies launched here have their way, Massachusetts will become a double epicenter for open-source software. Two startups with Massachusetts roots are hoping to become the next Red Hat Inc. (NYSE: RHT) of their respective open-source communities, and venture dollars are chasing their efforts.
Acquia Inc. has closed $8 million in new financing — a story first reported on www.masshightech.com earlier this week, bringing to $15 million the total in funds raised by the company founded by Drupal creator Dries Buytaert. Read full article »
When it comes to open sourced content management platforms and their creators, there's no question about the celebrity status that WordPress and its young founder Matt Mullenweg have ascended to. If offered an opportunity to interview Mullenweg about some news, I'd undoubtedly jump on it. But when I was offered the chance to do the same with Dries Buytaert, my initial response was "Dries who?" Once I realized "Dries, the creator of Drupal," I didn't hesitate (podcast below). Duane Nickull was on my evangelism team when I worked at Adobe. As you'll see in the Adobe TV video embedded below, Duane is one of those colorful characters who make working in the tech industry a lot of fun. He has eclectic interests and seems to know everyone in the industry.

Dries has an interesting post on cloud computing as it relates to Drupal. There have been a bunch of recent announcements and things are generally heading in the right direction. According to Dries, getting Drupal in the cloud is all about making relational databases scale. Check it out.
