The Client

The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing and applying biomedical and health informatics to support patient care, teaching, research and healthcare administration.

AMIA is the official United States representative to the International Medical Informatics Association. It has grown to more than 5,000 members from 42 countries worldwide. Together, these members represent all basic, applied and clinical interests in healthcare information technology. It publishes the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.

The Situation

AMIA needed to refresh its decade-old website and build an experience that would engage members and increase functionality. Specifically, the organization wanted to provide a better user interface and user experience for members with enhanced navigation and personalized content delivery. Additionally, it wanted to increase membership and boost engagement with current members.

The Challenge

AMIA challenges included eliminating member access barriers and reducing member frustration— for example, its previous site did not allow single sign on and its navigation and search capabilities were underperforming. It also wanted to increase backend integrations with its association management system (AMS).

The Solution

AMIA tapped digital partner Unleashed Technologies, and together the teams began by analyzing AMIA’s membership base and developing advanced audience segmentation. By doing this, they were able to better map out targeted content, all within a no-code solution that empowers AMIA staff to update website content to ensure members had up-to-date information. This process helps to create a roadmap for implementing Acquia Personalization.

Acquia Personalization allows AMIA to collect user information in a simple, organized fashion. As data collection is underway, the AMIA team began developing the immense amounts of content needed for a quality personalized experience. Additionally, AMIA takes advantage of Acquia Cloud to automatically scale to ensure site performance and integrate Drupal application monitoring. Acquia Cloud also provides up to 99.99% uptime SLA and multi-zone availability for built-in redundancy.

The Results

Information archives are now easily searchable, and staff can quickly and easily update content, giving members a reason to return. AMIA has received positive feedback about the look, feel and ease of use of the new website. Soon, members will be welcomed by a personalized experience using the Acquia Personalization.
